日光

Posted by
L'explorateur (Vancouver, Canada) on 15 February 2011 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The 4th image in this Japanese series.

The huge black Torii in Nikkou (日光, literally sunlight), a symbolic gate between the profane and the sacred.
Nikkou has been the center of Shinto and Buddhist worship for many centuries.
The first temple has been built in 766 A.D. It now hosts many shrines and temples (maybe the most decorated in the whole country) and it’s the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
The day I took this picture it was pouring cats and dogs!
Nikkou is just 140 km North of Tokyo.
